Chiefs and fire service leaders from across the state came out to support Chief Kettelle as he takes the reigns of the department he has served for decades. Minimum Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age as of Friday, April 1, 2016 ¹
  • Must be a High School graduate or possess a General Education Diploma (GED) or equivalency as of Friday, April 1, 2016 ¹
  • Must possess a valid Emergency Medical Technician Basic Certification within six (6) months after initial date of employment with the City of Newport.
  • Must attain NFPA 1001, Firefighter 1 & 2 Certification from the RI Fire Academy within 3 years of initial date of employment with the City of Newport.
  • Must receive or be in possession of a valid certificate of successful completion of the Physical Performance Assessment (PPA) test issued by the Rhode Island Association of Fire Chiefs AT TIME OF APPOINTMENT to the Newport Fire Department (visit their web site at rifirechiefs.com/ppa-info – for more information).
  • Must be able to perform the essential job functions of a Newport Firefighter.
  • Must successfully pass each phase of the examination process.

¹ PLEASE ATTACH A COPY OF YOUR BIRTH CERTIFICATE, HS DIPOLMA OR GED, STATE DRIVER’S LICENSE, and DD-214 MILITARY FORM (if applicable), WITH YOUR APPLICATION.

City Examination Process (listed in no particular order): All candidates must meet the minimum passing thresholds for each of the following:

  • General Firefighter Written Aptitude Examination ● Personal Reference Checks
  • Interview with the Fire Chief & Senior Staff ● Police Background Investigations
  • Psychological & Physical Examinations including Drug Screen ● Oral Board Interview

Fire service and community leaders are encouraged to attend this R&R Workshop.

There is NO COST to attend the workshop; mileage, 2 nights lodging, and 2 days per diem for attendees will be reimbursed upon completion of the Workshop.
